IELTS is a test to assess your English ability. If you are going to an English speaking country to pursue undergraduate or graduate studies or to a country where education will be conducted in English language, you may be required to take this test. When you are going to an English speaking country for higher studies or for immigration, you may be required to prove your English language proficiency through IELTS test.

There are two ways: one is Computer-based and the other is Paper-based IELTS test.

The Reading, Listening, and Writing Section together will span for 2 hours and 40 minutes, and Speaking alone happens on a separate day. There won’t be breaks between the sections.

You have to take Academic IELTS if you are planning to use the IELTS score for study purpose. And you will have to take general IELTS if you are going to use the IELTS score for immigration purpose or for applying to work abroad.

UKVI IELTS test is same as IELTS test, except that the Test Report Form (TRF) would be little different, and would be approved by UK home office. They call this test as the Secured English Language Test (SELT). Take this test only when the University or your employer is requesting you to take this specific test.

Academic IELTS test has 4 sections: Reading(3 passages, 40 questions, 60 minutes), Listening (4 recordings, 40 questions, 30 minutes in total), Writing (2 questions: a graph based writing (150 words, 20 minutes) and point-of-view based writing (250 words, 40 minutes), and Speaking (3 questions: a familiar topic, a particular topic, and an abstract topic, 15 minutes in total).

General IELTS test has 4 sections: Reading(Extracts from books and magazines, 40 questions, 60 minutes), Listening (4 recordings, 40 questions, 30 minutes in total), Writing (2 questions: a letter writing (150 words, 20 minutes) and point-of-view based writing (250 words, 40 minutes) and Speaking (3 questions: a familiar topic, a particular topic, and an abstract topic, 15 minutes in total).

The test score you receive is valid for 2 years.

You can take the test any number of times.

For Computer Based Test you will get in 4 to 5 days; and for Paper based test you will receive in 13 days after the test.
