What GRE score you should aim for

There is no magical GRE score that will work as Aladdin’s lamp.  Admission to the top grad schools is not based only on any GRE score, be it magical or tragical. But not getting a score above 305, from our experience, will make you appear as a weak candidate. You should aim to get at least 305, if you wish to put a decent application. With this number, there is no assurance, and no number is actually an assurance, but you will not be looked down on, or rejected without thought, with this.  Higher the score from this threshold, better your application will be.  Anything less than it, you got to try hard through other means to persuade the admissions committee. Trying hard reeks desperation and it is not a good sign. Though the schools want to give the impression that what matters is the whole package, what you are as a whole, and not just one aspect, the truth is some aspects are weighed in more than others. Your score is seen to a proxy for how you would handle the course, whether you would excel or make excuses. It is in fact weighed in more.
